Only 16 and Amanda Imani is already on her way to the showbiz big leagues. But what makes this singersongwriter stand apart from her peers?
“It started a long time ago. I used to sing to Disney songs a lot. As I grew up, I started listening to more serious music like Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys. I knew then that this is what I wanted to do,” said Amanda, who was only five years old when she first realised her passion for singing.
Not just a pretty face and a beautiful voice, this artist is endowed with a commitment to work.
“When you are in the studio, you have to be very focused. You have to apply the right kind of emotions to the lyrics that you’re singing or else it’s going to sound lifeless. “When I was recording my debut album, it was very exhausting. When I first started, I had to adjust my time to fit the recording schedule. I even lost my voice due to working excessively in the studio. But I got used to it with time,” she said.
Amanda gushes on prospects for the future.
“I can’t imagine myself doing something I don’t like. I love singing and I have been blessed with understanding parents who respect what I love doing” Amanda said. In her song writing efforts she draws inspiration from very personal feelings, saying that she “penned some of the lyrics in the album with the help of Ajai. Basically, I write whatever I feel at the time” she said, referring to respected local songwriter and producer of the Wake the Baby label. He was the one who discovered her, after which she was invited by Tiara Jacquelina to Starmaker’s Musical Theatre Bootcamp.
Having completed recording her debut album, Amanda says she can’t wait to share it with her fans.
“A lot of effort has been poured into it and most important of all, I really hope my fans can relate to the songs,” she said.

Frankly, I don’t see the value of twitter. I read one market research report that revealed that nearly half of all tweets was “pointless babble.” Only 9% had “pass-along value.” Perhaps only 4% was “news.” Okay, I’m a senior citizen, but I get Instant Messaging. I get MySpace, FaceBook and Friendster. Heck, I even get an occasional rap song, if the beat and melody are just right. But this SMS for the internet seems a bit too thinly clever — a bit too much fad and flash in the pan, for my tastes. Maybe there’s a Zen side to this. Anyone care to Enlighten me?
